As you may all know, pilots should stay in touch with the air traffic control towers before, during, and after take-offs and landings especially. Due to the risk of miscommunication because of mispronunciations or connection cuts of the radio, aviators use an aviation alphabet. It is also commonly known as the NATO phonetic alphabet or ICAO spelling alphabet, too.
It is a phonetic alphabet with 26 letters that each letter has its own code word. Not to give a spoiler for the aviation alphabet quiz, let me give you just a piece of example from this alphabet and code letters. For instance, if a pilot wants to say he is approaching Toronto Pearson Airport for landing with a code of ‘YYZ’, he would be coding it ‘Yankee Yankee Zulu’, as Yankee stands for ‘Y’ and Zulu stands for ‘Z’.
With this initial knowledge, we invite you to test our aviation alphabet quiz! If you have never been familiar with the aviation alphabet before, you can check our Instagram post with the letters and code words. Give yourself a couple of minutes to memorize them and come back to take the aviation alphabet quiz. If you already know the alphabet, take the quiz instantly!
