How did you guys meet? Can you tell us the story of you becoming a couple as well?

We met in a small coastal town called Newquay in England when we were just 16 while we were both on holiday with our friends. However, after a holiday romance, we went on with University studies separately. But 7 years later at a random meeting in London, it seemed there was still a very big spark and we have been together ever since! Turns out having that time apart was the best thing that could have happened.

How did you decide to travel the world together?

We spent 2 years together enjoying the London lifestyle when we decided that we wanted an adventure. We had done a few trips together both short and longer distances but wanted to do something a bit more life-changing and exciting. So we packed up our bags, quit our full-time jobs in London, and booked a one-way ticket to Thailand with the view to travel for a few months and to end up in Australia. We did exactly that, and 6 years later we still haven’t moved back home!

What are the best/worst sides of traveling as a couple?

Traveling as a couple is the best! It means you get to share everything together, all the special moments, epic sunsets, delicious food, and exciting travel experiences. Honestly, there are far more positives. For some couples it can be tough being in each other’s company 24/7, you REALLY get to know your partner in every way! But we have learned to live with any annoying habits and got through that tough bit haha.

Is there any particular moment from your trips that you’ll always remember?

James: There are two moments that stick out for both of us. The first was in Hawaii. It was Alex’s first taste of the USA, and the landscape in Kauai absolutely blew our minds.

Alex: We had done a tough hike down to a waterfall and at the bottom, it was just us, and James got down on one knee and proposed. A ‘wow’ moment that will remain ingrained in our memories forever! And the other was when we hired a 1970’s old school Kombi campervan in New Zealand, we parked up at Lake Wakatipu and we couldn’t wipe the smile off our faces. That really made us fall in love with van life and changed our entire perspective on life and how we wanted to live it going forward.

Traveling as two people can be challenging from time to time. What would be your advice for other couples to travel in harmony as well?

Patience is key, living in a confined space with anyone other than yourself can sometimes take a bit of time to adjust! They say if you can travel together long term it will make or break, and it really is true, there can be a lot of pressure when on the move all the time, trying to navigate your way around new places, the stresses of finding somewhere to sleep, managing money, etc. We found that each having our own things to look after really helped, so I (Alex) manage the budgeting and accommodation side of things while James will make sure we get to new places safely!

You’ve also recently bought a van, Naia the Bus. How did it change the way you guys travel?

Ah, Naia! Yes! We are so happy to have finally purchased our very own bus! Our tiny home on wheels! We developed a love for van life a few years ago, in fact, it became a bit of an obsession! We have always wanted to buy and convert a van but it never seemed like the right time as we were always on the move, however this year we find ourselves confined to Australia, and so it seems like the perfect time to do it. Once she is finished, it will allow us to work and explore on the road, we are very excited about that!
